The Rising Star from Assam Who Stood Tall at the World Stage
From the floodplains of Assam to the global cricket stage, Uma Chetry’s inspiring journey from village dreams to World Cup glory defines courage, class, and the new face of Indian women’s cricket.
In a glittering ICC Women’s World Cup where champions were made and dreams fulfilled, one name shone quietly yet brightly — Uma Chetry. Though she might not have played a single innings as the secondary wicketkeeper-batter after Richa Ghosh, her presence in the squad marked a historic milestone. Standing tall at the podium as a World Cup winner, Uma embodied the spirit of perseverance, discipline, and silent strength that defines a true athlete. Her achievement is not just personal glory; it’s a symbol of hope and representation for an entire region that had long awaited its sporting hero.

Born and raised in Kandhulimari village, about 10 kilometers from Bokakhat in Assam, Uma’s journey began in humble surroundings. The youngest of five siblings, she grew up in a place that floods several times a year, often disrupting daily life. Yet, amid these challenges, a plastic bat and ball bought from a Durga Puja pandal became her first connection to cricket. What began as innocent play soon turned into a passion that would break barriers and place her among India’s elite women cricketers. Her rise from the muddy fields of Assam to the global stage speaks of an unwavering belief in dreams, no matter how distant they may seem. Adbhut Brand Studio | Utsav

Uma’s path was never easy. Training with local boys, often without proper gear or facilities, she developed resilience and hunger for success. Her international debut came on July 7, 2024, in a T20I against South Africa, followed by her ODI debut against Bangladesh on October 26 in Navi Mumbai. These milestones made her the first cricketer from Assam to play in an ICC Women’s World Cup — a feat that redefined the sporting identity of the Northeast.

In domestic cricket, Uma represents the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League, where her skills continue to sharpen. Her childhood coach, Mehboob Alam, expressed immense pride, saying, “In Bokakhat, we have very limited resources, but what Uma has done has inspired many.” Indeed, her journey has ignited dreams among young girls who now see cricket not as a distant fantasy but as an achievable goal. As celebrations erupted across Assam, the most touching image was that of Uma’s mother holding her daughter’s medal — a silent yet powerful reminder of sacrifice, faith, and love. Uma Chetry’s story is more than a cricketing success; it’s an anthem of courage, proving that talent knows no boundaries. From the floodplains of Assam to the global cricket stage, Uma stands as a beacon of inspiration — a proud daughter of India, and the face of a new sporting dawn for the Northeast.
