Few actors have left behind a legacy as warm, enduring, and universally loved as Reema Lagoo. Born as Nayan Bhadbhade on June 21, 1958, in Bombay, she inherited the artistic spirit of her mother, the acclaimed Marathi actress Mandakini Bhadbhade. From appearing as a child artist in Marathi films like Haa Mazha Marg Eklaa and Masterji to becoming one of India's most recognizable faces, Reema’s journey was built on talent, dedication, and an unmatched emotional depth. Her early years in Marathi theatre, especially through celebrated productions like Ti Phularani, shaped the performer who would later touch millions of hearts.

Reema's transition into mainstream cinema was marked by powerful performances across Marathi and Hindi films. During the early 1980s, she impressed audiences in films such as Aakrosh and Kalyug, proving her versatility beyond conventional roles. Simultaneously, she built a strong television presence through serials like Shodh, Khandaan, and Mahanagar. However, destiny had a much larger stage waiting for her. In 1988, her role as Juhi Chawla’s mother in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak brought her nationwide recognition and introduced audiences to an actress capable of bringing extraordinary warmth to ordinary characters.

Reema Lagoo: Bollywood's 'favourite mother' dies

The turning point came with Maine Pyar Kiya, where she played Salman Khan’s mother despite being only seven years older than him. The role earned her a Filmfare nomination and transformed her into the definitive mother figure of modern Hindi cinema. Unlike the stereotypical mothers of earlier decades, Reema portrayed women who were compassionate, understanding, and emotionally intelligent. Her memorable performances in Aashiqui and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! further cemented her place as the most beloved screen mother of the 1990s.

While cinema celebrated her emotional depth, television showcased her remarkable comic timing. Sitcoms like Shriman Shrimati and Tu Tu Main Main turned her into a household favorite. Her ability to seamlessly switch between drama and comedy highlighted her exceptional range. Even in the 2000s, she continued delivering memorable performances in films like Kal Ho Naa Ho, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, and the award-winning Marathi film Reshamgaath.

On May 18, 2017, Indian cinema lost one of its most cherished performers to a cardiac arrest. Yet Reema Lagoo lives on through her unforgettable characters, timeless performances, and the warmth she brought to every role. She wasn’t just Bollywood’s favorite mother—she was the emotional heartbeat of an entire generation.
