A Martyr in the Battle Against Punjab’s Drug Menace
Dr. Neha Shoree, a courageous Punjab FDA officer, was shot dead in 2019 for cracking down on illegal drug networks, symbolizing integrity, bravery, and sacrifice in India’s fight against corruption.

On the morning of 29 March 2019, just a day after Holi, tragedy struck the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) office in Kharar, Mohali, Punjab. Around 10:30 a.m., a man arrived on a motorcycle, entered the building after collecting an entry slip, and walked upstairs to meet Dr. Neha Shoree, a senior officer in the licensing department. Within minutes, the sound of gunfire shattered the calm. When staff members rushed to her office, they found Dr. Shoree lifeless, shot in the head and chest. Her eight-year-old niece, who had accompanied her that morning for a Holi shopping trip, stood frozen beside her — a silent witness to the brutal killing.

Dr. Neha Shoree’s journey was one marked by excellence, integrity, and courage. A PhD in Biochemistry, she initially worked as a lecturer before joining the Punjab FDA in 2009. Her entry into government service came at a time when the state was reeling under the burden of rampant drug abuse — a crisis later depicted in the film Udta Punjab. Determined to make a difference, Dr. Shoree became known for her uncompromising stance against illegal chemists and pharmaceutical malpractice, earning both respect and resentment in equal measure. Among those affected by her strict enforcement was Balwinder Singh, a chemist from Morinda. During a raid led by Dr. Shoree, officials discovered 32 varieties of narcotic medicines being sold without valid licenses. Acting by the book, she recommended the cancellation of his chemist licence — a move that was duly approved. When Singh’s attempts to bribe her failed, he allegedly resorted to threats, revealing the dark nexus between the drug mafia and those desperate to protect their profits.

On that fateful March morning, Balwinder Singh entered her office with a .32-calibre licensed pistol. After a brief exchange of words, he fired at Dr. Shoree at point-blank range and, moments later, turned the gun on himself. Both were declared dead within minutes. The 36-year-old officer left behind a legacy of integrity — and a grieving family, including her father, a 1971 war veteran, who has since demanded justice and a deeper probe into the powerful network that orchestrates Punjab’s drug trade.

In an era when celebrity controversies often dominate public attention, Dr. Neha Shoree’s sacrifice stands as a reminder of the real heroes among us — individuals who choose duty over fear and integrity over compromise. Her courage continues to inspire countless others, especially women in public service, proving that true power lies in standing firm for what is right, even when the cost is life itself.
